The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has announced the extension of the nomination period for National Assembly and Mayoral/Council Chairperson elections after concerns raised by aspiring candidates.

The nominations, originally scheduled for 20th and May 21, 2026, would now take place over an extended period, according to ECZ Chief Electoral Officer, Brown Kasaro.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, Kasaro said the adjustment was intended to allow broader participation in the electoral process.

Kasaro cited cases of lost voter’s cards as the main reason for the change.

“The nominations for the National Assembly and Mayoral/Council Chairperson which were scheduled to take place on 20th and 21st May 2026 respectively, have been extended and will now take place as follows,” he announced.

Kasaro said under the new schedule, National Assembly nominations will run from 20th to May 22, 2026 and for Mayoral and Council Chairperson nominations will be held from 21st to May 22, 2026.

“The Commission has made this decision in consideration of concerns raised by aspiring candidates who have reported having lost their Voter’s Cards, thereby affecting their ability to adequately participate in the nomination process,” he stated.

Kasaro said to address the issue, the Commission had opened a special window for replacement of lost voter’s cards.

He stated that the replacement exercise would be restricted to aspiring candidates only and would run from 20th to 23rd May 2026.

Kasaro urged applicants to produce a police report confirming the loss of the voter’s card and evidence of intention to stand for an elective office.

“The replacement exercise will take place from 20th to 23rd May, 2026. The exercise will be conducted at the Electoral Commission of Zambia Head Office in Lusaka between 08:00hrs to 17:00hrs,” he said.

Kasaro urged affected candidates to visit its head office within the stated period with the required documentation.

ECZ also clarified that ward councillor nominations would proceed as scheduled on 21st and May 22, 2026.
