Zambia pushes digital jobs agenda in Finland

Zambia is implementing reforms aimed at strengthening macroeconomic stability, improving public financial management and accelerating digital transformation to support entrepreneurship and youth employment, Ministry of Finance and National Planning Permanent Secretary for Planning and Administration, Prudence Kaoma, has said.

Speaking during the Fourth United Nations Office of the High Representative Future Forum in Helsinki on Wednesday, Kaoma said government was aligning national planning frameworks with emerging technological trends and labour market demands.

She said Zambia was prioritising policies aimed at equipping young people with skills relevant to economies increasingly driven by digital technologies, artificial intelligence and innovation.

“We call for stronger South-South and North-South cooperation to mobilise investment, technology transfer, skills partnerships and financing for youth employment and economic transformation programmes in developing countries,” Kaoma said.

Kaoma is representing Zambia at the high-level forum running from May 19 to 21, which has brought together policymakers, development institutions, researchers, private sector leaders and cooperating partners to discuss strategies for empowering young people through education, innovation and inclusive economic growth in Least Developed Countries.

The meeting was officially opened by Alexander Stubb, who reaffirmed Finland’s commitment to multilateral cooperation, sustainable development and innovation-driven partnerships with developing economies.

Senior Finnish government officials attending the forum include Ville Tavio and Elina Valtonen.

During the forum, Kaoma also held discussions with Finland’s Minister for Trade and Development as well as technology and business leaders on investment opportunities, innovation partnerships and economic cooperation.

She further participated in panel discussions examining how governments can develop public finance and policy systems capable of preparing young people for future labour markets and the digital economy.

The forum is being coordinated by the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States in partnership with the Government of Finland, the OECD Development Centre and UNU-WIDER.

Zambia’s participation comes as government continues implementing economic reforms aimed at promoting innovation-led growth, expanding youth opportunities and strengthening human capital development.
