The High Court for Zambia sitting at Kabwe has convicted Webster Chongo for vandalism and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour.
Chongo was convicted before Judge Chanda-Mate on May 7, 2026 after he was found guilty of vandalism, contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
According to a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday by the ZESCO Public Relations Department, the court sentenced Chongo to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour on two counts.
“The court sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour on two counts, with both sentences running concurrently from his date of arrest on 14 March 2025, meaning he will serve an effective 10-year jail term,” reads the statement said.
ZESCO Limited welcomed the conviction and sentencing, describing the judgment as a major boost in the fight against attacks on critical electricity infrastructure.
The utility said the conviction was a strong reminder that vandalism of electricity infrastructure is a serious crime.
It noted that the crime had far-reaching consequences for households, businesses, health facilities, schools, and national productivity.
