President Hakainde Hichilema has announced that he and Vice President Mutale Nalumango had successfully filed nomination papers for re-election on August 13.

Hichilema said the bid for re-election was based on a view of leadership as duty and sacrifice.

“This afternoon, alongside our running mate, Her Honour the Republican Vice President, Mrs. Mutale W.K. Nalumango, we successfully filed our nomination papers as we seek re-election on August 13,” he said on his Facebook.

Reflecting on recent years, the President said Zambia had faced division, economic hardship, and uncertainty, with many losing hope.

He said the country was now recovering. “A few years ago, our nation faced division, economic hardship, and uncertainty. Many had lost hope. Yet through resilience, unity, and God’s grace, Zambia is rising again.”

He cited changes in public life and the economy as evidence of progress, emphasizing that peace, order, and confidence have returned.

“We seek re-election mindful that leadership is a call to service, sacrifice, and duty to country,” President Hichilema stated.

He said jobs, investment, and opportunity were growing, free education and local development were changing lives in every community.

The president said material progress should be matched by protection of national values, but progress alone was not enough and Zambians should protect the values that define them.

He described peace as the country’s greatest inheritance and credited unity and dialogue for Zambia’s stability.

“Peace is our greatest inheritance. Zambia has endured because we chose unity over hatred, dialogue over violence, and country over self. This legacy must never be sacrificed to division, ethnicity, corruption, or political bickering,” he said.

Hichilema stated that the upcoming election served to strengthen democratic institutions rather than deepen divisions.

“This election must not divide us. It must strengthen our democracy and unite our people,” he said.

The Head of State called for a rejection of negative political conduct and a focus on accountable leadership.

“Let us reject violence, arrogance, and toxic politics. Let us choose leadership rooted in integrity, compassion, service, and results,” he said.

Addressing citizens directly, Hichilema said the country’s future depended on collective effort. “To every citizen: Zambia belongs to all of us. Together, we will keep building a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous nation, where every person lives with dignity, hope, and opportunity,” he said.

He closed with a call for national unity and a blessing for the country, emphasizing that the country should move forward together as One Zambia, One Nation, One People.

President also Hichilema wished his opponents well after filing nomination papers to run for a second term in the August 13, 2026, general election.

He also thanked the Electoral Commission of Zambia for overseeing the process.

“I am sure my colleagues and all other contestants are going through the process successfully. Those who have not succeeded, we can only wish them good luck. I am sure next time they will make it,” he said.

Hichilema said the UPND campaign would focus on the government’s record and economic growth.

“I think so far we have done the heavy lifting. What is left is to accelerate the economic growth of our country,” he said.
