Police arrest five over alleged assault on former MP, Nkombo, in Mazabuka

Police in Mazabuka District have arrested five men in connection with the assault on former Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament, Garry Nkombo, and damage to his property.

The Zambia Police Service said the incident occurred on May 20, 2026, at around 09:30 hours at Mazabuka Civic Centre.

Southern Province Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo confirmed in a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday, saying on May 22, police apprehended five suspects in connection with the case.

Those detained are Bilden Shalooba, 50, of Waterfalls Compound, Lusaka, Emmanuel Mweemba, 35, of Nkabika Compound, Mazabuka, Chimuka Siantabwanike, 25, of Zambia Compound, Monze, Lubeba Nsazya, 26, of Manungu Compound, Monze, and Jeremiah Nsazya, 33, also of Manungu Compound, Monze.

“The suspects are being held in police custody and are expected to appear in court soon,” Namalongo said.

He said the case involved charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious damage to property.

Nkombo, 60, had gone to file his nomination papers as an independent candidate when he was allegedly manhandled and assaulted by a group of suspected UPND members.

He reported the case at Mazabuka Central Police Station on May 20 where he complained to have sustained a bruised left arm, a painful right arm, and general body pains. His shirt and sunglasses were also damaged in the incident.
