29 Inmates still at large after Kapiri Mposhi jailbreak

The Zambia Police Service says it has launched an immediate investigation after 33 inmates escaped from lawful custody at Kapiri Mposhi Police Station in Central Province on June 13, 2026, with 29 still at large.

Police Spoksesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, said a dedicated intra-agency task team has been tasked to coordinate the search and recapture operation.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Chilabi said the team had intensified patrols and operations across Central Province and neighbouring districts.

“Of the thirty-three (33) inmates who escaped, four (4) have since been recaptured. Efforts to locate the remaining twenty-nine (29) escapees are ongoing and remain a top operational priority,” he stated.

Chilabi appealed to members of the public to assist law enforcement by providing information that could lead to the arrest of the fugitives.

He also reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to securing all detention facilities and protecting public safety following the incident.

“The Service has noted with serious concern the escape of thirty-three (33) inmates from lawful custody at Kapiri Mposhi Police Station in Central Province on June 13, 2026,” Chilabi stated.

He said an immediate investigation had been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the escape.

“The Zambia Police Service appeals to members of the public to remain vigilant and to assist law enforcement by reporting any relevant information to the nearest police station or through established police communication channels,” Chilabi said.

He warned that anyone found harbouring or assisting the escapees will face criminal charges.

Chilabi further reminded the public that harbouring, concealing, or otherwise assisting any person who has escaped from lawful custody constitutes a criminal offence under the laws of Zambia.

“Citizens are urged to act responsibly and within the confines of the law.The Zambia Police Service remains resolute in its duty to maintain law and order despite the incident,” he said.

Chilabi assured that the Zambia Police Service remained resolute in its duty to ensure public safety and maintain law and order.

He indicated that the Service would provide further updates as investigations and operations progress.
