Zambia police warn against AI-generated fake content targeting officials

The Zambia Police Service has warned the public against the creation and circulation of misleading AI-generated content depicting violence and other offensive material aimed at senior public officials.

Police Spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, said the Service had noted with concern the misuse of Artificial Intelligence technology to produce deceptive digital content.

In a statement issued in Lusaka, Chilabi said the Service, working with other law enforcement agencies, had intensified investigations into the creation and circulation of such material ahead of the 2026 General Elections.

He reminded citizens that creating, publishing, and disseminating false, manipulated, or misleading content through computer systems are offences under the Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025 and other applicable laws.

“The Service reminds members of the public that the creation, publication, and dissemination of false, manipulated, or misleading content through computer systems are offences under the Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025 and other applicable laws of the Republic of Zambia,” Chilabi stated.

He warned that appropriate and decisive legal action would be taken against any individual found to have created, distributed, or shared material intended to mislead the public or cause alarm.

Chilabi added that the spread of fabricated digital content targeting members of the Defence and Security Wings had the potential to undermine public confidence, public safety, and national security.

He also urged members of the public to exercise caution and responsibility when creating or sharing information on digital platforms.

“The Zambia Police Service, working in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, has intensified investigations into the creation and circulation of such content,” he said.

“Appropriate and decisive legal action will be taken against any individual found to have created, distributed, or shared material intended to mislead the public, cause alarm, or otherwise violate the law,” Chilabi warned.
