Police in Mufulira District have arrested a 32-year-old Kitwe man for allegedly assaulting a Chinese national supervising the Mufulira–Mokambo Road construction project.
The arrest follows a video circulating on social media showing the victim being physically assaulted by the suspect and others.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the incident occurred on June 28, 2026, around 10:30 hours at the AVIC International Camp Site along the Mufulira–Mokambo Road.
Mokambo Police Station received a report of Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm through Murundu Police Post.
The complainant is Shao Hong, aged 46, a Chinese national and supervisor for the road project.
“Hong was carrying out routine supervisory duties and followed up on tipper truck drivers who had reported late for work in Murundu area. During the inspection, he suspected that some drivers had consumed alcohol and proceeded to administer breathalyser tests,” Chilabi said.
Preliminary investigations indicate that some of the drivers became unruly. One driver, identified as Wana Chambalu, aged 32, of Kitwe, allegedly assaulted the complainant by punching and kicking him, thereby causing bodily injuries.
He said following investigations, Chambalu was apprehended and detained for the offence of Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm.

“The Zambia Police Service strongly condemns all forms of violence, including workplace-related violence. The Service remains committed to ensuring that all persons who engage in criminal acts are brought before the courts of law, regardless of nationality, occupation, or status,” Chilabi said.
In a related incident at the same AVIC road construction project in Murundu area on June 28, 2026, around 10:20 hours, a road traffic accident was recorded involving motor vehicle registration number BAE 117, driven by Shadreck Mulenga, aged 26.
Chilabi said the victim, Kalyangele Ndale, aged 30, sustained injuries after being hit by a reversing motor vehicle while standing beside his own vehicle.
Ndale was rushed to hospital, received medical attention and was later discharged. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
