Police probe attempted murder after man shot in Nsama district

Police in Nsama District, Northern Province, are investigating an attempted murder case in which a 44-year-old man sustained multiple gunshot wounds after being shot by unknown assailants.

The incident occurred on July 11, 2026, at about 20:00 hours in Chilima Village, Chishela area, and was reported to police later that night at 22:16 hours by Charles Mwenya, a Zambia Wildlife Police Officer based in Nsumbu Village.

According to Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Simunji Mulonda, preliminary investigations indicate that the victim, David Chansa, was at home with his children when he went outside to answer the call of nature.

Mulonda said that as Chansa approached his pit latrine, he heard a gunshot from the area between two toilets within the yard before collapsing after sustaining multiple gun pellet wounds to both legs.

“The firearm used is suspected to have been a shotgun due to the pattern of injuries sustained,” Mulonda said in a statement issued on Sunday.

He said the victim cried out for help and was assisted by his 18-year-old son, Davies Chansa, who found him lying on the ground bleeding profusely.

Neighbours later responded and rushed Chansa to Chishela Rural Health Centre, where he was admitted before being referred to Mporokoso District Hospital for specialised treatment.

Police visited the scene and a medical report was issued. A docket for attempted murder has since been opened, while investigations remain ongoing.

Mulonda said the suspects remain at large.

He noted that the shooting occurred barely a week after another serious crime in the same area in which, according to police, a person was killed following allegations of practising witchcraft.

“The Zambia Police Service is appealing to members of the public who may have any information that could assist in identifying or locating the suspects involved in this shooting to report to the nearest police station,” Mulonda said.

He added that any information provided would be treated with the strictest confidence and that further updates would be communicated as investigations progress.
