The Zambia Police Service in Western Province has confirmed that a wanted suspect was shot dead on July 24, 2026 during an operation to effect his arrest in the Kashumba Market area of Mongu District.
Mongu Central Police Station recorded the incident at approximately 14:31 hours following a shooting that occurred around 14:00 hours.
In a statement issued in Mongu on Saturday, Western Province Commissioner of Police, Rae Hamoonga, identified only by the aliases “Asela” and “Michael Scofield,” and was believed to be Mununga, aged in his early twenties.
Hamoonga said Mununga was a wanted suspect in connection with several serious offences.
He said the suspect was under investigation for aggravated robbery, murder, rape, theft from person, and breaking offences committed within Mongu District and other parts of Western Province.
“Acting on credible intelligence that the suspect had booked accommodation at a guest house in the Kashumba area, police officers mounted an operation to effect his lawful arrest,” Hamoonga stated.
He said that upon noticing the officers, the suspect fled by climbing through the roof of the guest house onto a neighbouring building in an attempt to evade arrest.
Hamoonga said the situation escalated during the pursuit when he charged at one of the police officers while armed with a knife, posing an immediate threat to the officer’s life and safety.
Faced with the threat, officers discharged a firearm in the lawful execution of their duties in an effort to neutralize the danger and the suspect sustained gunshot injuries, Hamoonga added.

“He was immediately rushed to Lewanika General Hospital for medical attention. The suspect sustained gunshot injuries and was immediately rushed to Lewanika General Hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” Hamoonga said.
The Western Province Commissioner of Police further issued a warning to individuals engaged in violent crime across the province.
“Law enforcement officers will not relent in their constitutional duty to protect life and property. Criminals are strongly advised to surrender peacefully whenever confronted by police. Any attempt to violently resist arrest or attack police officers or members of the public may attract a lawful and proportionate response,” Hamoonga said.
He said the Zambia Police Service in Western Province remained committed to combating crime and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
Hamoonga encouraged members of the public to continue partnering with police by providing credible information that would assist in bringing offenders to justice.
