The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has announced the formal resignation of four aspiring candidates in Chongwe District ahead of the 13 August 2026 General Elections.
The ECZ, through District Electoral Officer and Town Clerk, Damson Mukwato, named the candidates and the positions for which they were nominated across parliamentary, mayoral and ward levels.
In a public notice issued through the Office of the District Electoral Officer, those who have resigned are Robster Mwanza, contesting the Chongwe East Constituency parliamentary seat under the Resolute Party, and Kelly Nyambe, who was seeking election as Mulenje Ward councillor under the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP).
Others are Brian Mutalange, an independent candidate for Lwimba Ward councillor, and David Daka, who was contesting the Chalimbana Ward councillorship under the United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) as Member of Parliament for Chongwe East Constituency under the Resolute Party, and three ward councillor candidates.
“The Commission has received and accepted the notices of resignations submitted by the above-named candidates,” Mukwato stated in the notice.
Despite their withdrawal, Mukwato clarified that the names of the four candidates would still appear on ballot papers for the forthcoming elections because ballot printing processes had already advanced.
“Consequently, they shall no longer participate as candidates in the forthcoming general elections, notwithstanding the appearance of their names on the ballot papers,” he said.
Mukwato urged registered political parties, media organisations, civil society, faith-based groups and members of the public to take note of the development.
The resignations come less than three weeks before Zambians head to the polls for presidential, parliamentary and local government elections scheduled for 13 August 2026.
