Police officer dies after collapsing while on duty

A Zambia Police officer died after collapsing while on duty in Lusaka on Friday night, with authorities saying the cause of his sudden death was yet to be determined.

Constable Mumbuna Namakando of Kabwata Police Station collapsed near Lewanika Mall along Mosi-O-Tunya Road at about 22:00 hours on July 31.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer, Godfrey Chilabi, said the officer was rushed to Chilenje Level I Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Chilabi said the circumstances surrounding Constable Namakando’s collapse had not yet been established.

“The Zambia Police Service regrets to confirm the sudden death of Constable Mumbuna Namakando of Kabwata Police Station. He collapsed while on duty near Lewanika Mall along Mosi-O-Tunya Road on July 31, 2026, around 22:00 hours, in circumstances yet to be established,” he said.

He said the officer’s body had been taken to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination would be conducted to establish the cause of death.

Chilabi said police had extended their condolences to the deceased officer’s family, friends and colleagues.

He added that investigations into the incident were underway and that further details would be communicated once more information became available.
