Ecobank Zambia commits K1.5 million to upgrade Bauleni Legacy Academy

Ecobank Zambia has committed about K1.5 million over the next three years to upgrade Bauleni Legacy Academy in Lusaka, with the investment targeting school infrastructure and learner development.

The commitment was announced on Wednesday during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Ecobank Zambia and Family Legacy Missions Zambia at the bank’s head office in Lusaka.

Ecobank Zambia Managing Director, Aina Moore, said the partnership was among the bank’s most significant education-focused initiatives in recent years and would combine infrastructure development with programmes aimed at empowering hundreds of young people.

“It is a pleasure to be here today for what I believe is not just the signing of another agreement, but the beginning of a partnership that has the potential to change lives, shape futures, and create opportunities for hundreds of young people for years to come,” Moore said.

She said the investment differed from the bank’s usual commercial activities because it focused on children, education and future opportunities.

“When you invest in a child’s future, the dividends are felt for generations,” Moore said, describing education as one of the safest and most rewarding investments an institution can make.

“Family Legacy has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to serving vulnerable children, with values that closely align with Ecobank’s commitment to empowerment, inclusion and sustainable development,” she said.

Moore said the first phase of the project would upgrade the school’s information and communications technology laboratory, saying digital literacy was increasingly important for young people.

The second phase will focus on improving science laboratory facilities, while the third will involve construction of a dedicated feeding shelter to provide learners with a safe environment, she said.

Moore said the partnership would also extend beyond physical infrastructure by providing learners with mentorship, financial literacy, leadership development, career guidance and public speaking opportunities.

“Ecobank employees will actively participate in mentorship programmes, financial literacy training, leadership development initiatives, career guidance sessions and public speaking engagements throughout the three-year period,” she said.

Moore said Ecobank had invested more than K3 million in corporate social responsibility initiatives across Zambia over the past three years.

The initiatives have focused on education, financial literacy, health, environmental sustainability, community development, youth empowerment and social welfare under the bank’s Transforming Africa Through Education campaign, she said.

“The true success of this partnership will not be measured by how much money was invested, but by how many lives were transformed because of that investment. Zambia’s greatest resource is found in the limitless potential of its young people,” Moore added.
