ZCCM-IH seeks faster implementation of local content policy in mining sector

ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc (ZCCM-IH) has called for faster implementation of local content measures in Zambia’s mining sector to ensure rising mineral production creates more opportunities for local businesses and citizens.

ZCCM-IH Board Chairperson, Phesto Musonda, said growth in the mining sector should translate into tangible economic benefits through local jobs, skills development, business opportunities and stronger communities.

“Growth must have a real trickle-down effect. Our investments must create opportunities for Zambian businesses, develop local skills, create jobs and strengthen communities,” Musonda said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He was speaking during a site tour of CNMC Luanshya Copper Mines on Tuesday, where the ZCCM-IH board reviewed the mine’s operations and ongoing capital projects.

ZCCM-IH holds a 20% equity interest in CNMC Luanshya.

Musonda said ZCCM-IH remained committed to supporting the Zambia Growth Vision and would continue to play a role in the country’s mining and broader economic development.

The visit formed part of a wider Copperbelt investment tour aimed at assessing operational performance, strategic capital projects and governance across ZCCM-IH’s mining portfolio.

The board met CNMC Luanshya management, led by chairman Jiang Lei, to review the mine’s financial performance, operations, safety and infrastructure developments for the 2025 financial year and the first half of 2026.

The delegation also inspected several projects, including Shaft 28, where dewatering has been completed to facilitate further underground clearance and construction.

Other projects inspected included the Shaft 28 New Mine Site, Mashiba Ramp, Muliashi Open Pit backfilling, ventilation shafts and the installation of modern winding equipment.

ZCCM-IH Chief Executive Officer, Kakenenwa Muyangwa, said active shareholder oversight was important to ensuring strategic investments delivered long-term value.

“At Luanshya, the Board has seen tangible progress on projects such as Shaft 28 that are important to the mine’s long-term production. We will continue to work closely with CNMC Luanshya management to ensure these projects are delivered efficiently and translate into sustainable returns,” Muyangwa said.

He said developing a competitive Zambian supply chain and investing in local workforce skills would also be critical to strengthening the long-term resilience of the company’s mining assets.
