Six people have died and another sustained serious injuries following a head-on collision involving a Sino truck and a Toyota Wish in Chikankata District.
The accident occurred on October 25, 2026, at around 11:10 hours opposite Lusitu Farm, approximately 15 kilometres south of Chikankata Police Station along the Great North Road between Chikankata and Mazabuka.
Southern Province Commissioner of Police Moono Namalongo confirmed the accident in a statement issued in Choma on Tuesday.
Namalongo said the truck was driven by 62-year-old Mkhalipe Mwandu Mackson of Lusaka West, who was travelling from south to north in a Sino truck registration number AIH 1014, towing a trailer registration number AIH 1253.
“He escaped uninjured but left the scene after the accident and later reported himself to the Police. The truck sustained damage to its front bumper, grille and windscreen,” he said.
Namalongo said the other vehicle involved was a Toyota Wish registration number AIH 9873, driven by 40-year-old Levy Mutope of ZESCO Compound, Victoria Falls, Livingstone, who was travelling from north to south.
Mutope sustained fatal head injuries and was rushed to Mazabuka General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
“The Toyota Wish had six passengers on board. Four of them identified as Kabela Samba and Benjamin Kabamba both males of Chirundu, Cresencia Kabazungu a female of Chirundu and Nevious Moonga a female of Kafue sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at Mazabuka General Hospital,” he said.

Namalongo said another passenger, identified as 25-year-old Soko Boyd of Namwala, who had sustained serious injuries, died in the early hours of October 26, bringing the total number of fatalities to six.
He identified the surviving passenger as 30-year-old Rolf Namala of Garden Compound, Lusaka, who remained admitted to Mazabuka General Hospital in stable condition.
“The bodies of the six deceased persons have been deposited at Mazabuka General Hospital Mortuary, awaiting postmortem examinations,” Namalongo said.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the accident occurred when the driver of the Sino truck allegedly attempted to overtake improperly, lost control and collided head-on with the Toyota Wish.
“The driver of the Sino truck has since been arrested and charged with Dangerous Driving contrary to Section 155(1) of Act No. 11 of 2002 of the Roads and Road Traffic Act,” Namalongo said.
He said the driver remained in police custody awaiting court appearance.
Namalongo urged motorists to exercise caution when overtaking and to ensure that the road ahead was clear before attempting the manoeuvre.
