Five people have died in a road accident involving a minibus and two trucks on the Chitambo-Mansa Road in Mpelembe area, about 130 km from Serenje district, police said.

Central Province Police Commissioner, Lemekani Chirwa, said the accident occurred on November 1 at around 12:30 hours and involved a Toyota Hiace minibus and two Howo trucks.

In a statement issued in Serenje, Chirwa said preliminary investigations indicated that the minibus, which was travelling from north to south, collided with one of the trucks after its driver allegedly failed to keep to his nearside lane.

The minibus subsequently collided with the second truck travelling in the opposite direction before the driver lost control, veered off the road and overturned.

Four passengers died at the scene, while the minibus driver, Melvin Chipasha, 32, later died after being taken to Mpelembe Rural Health Post, bringing the death toll to five.

The deceased passengers were identified as Musonda Emmanuel, 31, of Serenje, Blessing Munyenyembe, 23, of Solwezi, Kunda Dina, 23, of Lusaka and Precious Miti, 24, of Lusaka.

Chirwa said the bodies had been taken to Serenje District Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.

The two truck drivers escaped without injuries.

The trucks were carrying bags of urea and D-Compound fertiliser and were travelling from south to north when the accident occurred.

Chirwa conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and urged motorists to observe traffic regulations, exercise caution and keep to their designated lanes.

Police said investigations into the accident were continuing.
