The body of the late Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) leader, Edith Nawakwi, arrived in Lusaka on Thursday from South Africa, where she died while undergoing medical treatment.
President Hakainde Hichilema has since accorded Nawakwi a State Funeral, which will be observed on Friday, April 11, 2025.
Several government officials, including Cabinet Ministers, gathered at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) to receive her remains.
Nawakwi passed away following a prolonged illness.
As the casket was offloaded, a somber mood gripped the airport grounds, with mourners and relatives breaking into loud wails of grief.
Among the dignitaries present to receive her body were Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati and Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Sylvia Masebo.
At the time of her death, Nawakwi was facing multiple legal challenges. She had been charged with abduction and threatening violence against Feluna and Milton Hatembo, a case that drew nationwide attention.
The State had recently requested the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court to assess her health condition at home due to her repeated court absences, but the application was dismissed.
Earlier, Magistrate Irene Wishimanga ruled that Nawakwi had a case to answer and placed her on defence, with trial proceedings scheduled to begin on December 2, 2024.
She was also preparing to call at least 75 witnesses in a separate matter involving allegations of seditious practices.
