A border development strategy is currently being developed by government in an effort to ensure Zambia has more One Stop Border Posts (OSBPs), essential for smooth trade facilitation.

The development of the strategy is being done by the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, says Zambia Border Post Upgrading Project (ZBPUP) Project Officer, Wilson Mazimba.

Mazimba, at a ZBPUP in an interview on the side-lines of the media training and sensitisation workshop in Chipata last week, observed the need for Zambia to have more OSBPs to encourage trade facilitation.

“It has been observed that we need more OSBPs in the country so the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry is developing a border development strategy.

“This is will need assessment for all borders which will be advertised to the investors,” he explained.

He pointed out that government had identified some border posts which were earmarked for upgrade to OSBPs.

Some of the borders mentioned by Mazimba were Victoria falls, Kipushi, Sikongo and Makambo, among others.

“A lot of discussions have been done to see how to develop these borders. The only challenge we have is finance, so government has decided to go into Public Private Partnership (PPP),” Mazimba stated.
