Zambia’s Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) says it has arrested and jointly charged two suspected drug suppliers in connection with the trafficking of 175 kilogrammes of dry cannabis from Malawi into Zambia.
DEC Public Relations Officer, Allan Tamba, identified the suspects as Moffat Mlotha, 39, a Malawian national, and Rebecca Nsomba, 53, a Zambian national.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Tamba said the two, who were on the commission’s watch list for transnational organised drug trafficking activities, were arrested after the cannabis was found concealed in sack bags and a laptop bag.
He said the consignment was allegedly transported from Malawi into Zambia through Lumezi District in Eastern Province.

“The drugs have since been seized, while Mlotha and Nsomba have been detained in lawful custody awaiting court appearances,” Tamba stated.
He said the arrests were a major milestone in the commission’s Operation Kufeza.
“The arrest underscores the Commission’s unwavering commitment to disrupting drug syndicates and safeguarding communities,” Tamba said.
Tamba thanked members of the public for their vigilance and for reporting illicit drug-related activities.
He encouraged citizens, particularly those living in border areas, to remain alert and continue sharing information on suspicious drug-related activities.
