The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has found former Lumezi Member of Parliament, Munir Zulu, guilty of seditious practices.

Delivering the verdict, Senior Resident Magistrate Trevor Kasanda said Zulu’s remarks had the potential to incite public discontent and stir opposition against the government.

Zulu was charged with one count of seditious practices contrary to Section 57(1)(b) as read with Section 60(1)(e) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

The charge stemmed from a social media post made on September 6, 2023, in which Zulu claimed he had reliable information that President Hakainde Hichilema would dissolve Parliament on September 8 and call for early elections.

He allegedly urged citizens to prepare for campaigns.

The prosecution argued that Zulu’s statement could provoke unrest among the public.

The court found him guilty as charged, with sentencing scheduled for Friday.
