Family mourns as 6-year-old drowns in soak-away pit

The Zambia police in Mansa have disclosed that a six-year-old boy of Mansa has died after he fell in a soak away as he was playing with his eight-year older brother at their Neighbour’s home.

The incident happened on Wednesday around 16:00 hours while Gift Nakazwe, 37, the mother of the deceased was fast asleep.

Luapula province police commanding officer Gloria Mulele said Moffat Chilufya met his fate after falling in three meters deep soak-away which was left uncovered.

She said in a statement on Thursday that   Nakazwe reported the matter to the police shortly after she learnt of the death of her son.

“We received a report from Nakazwe that her son died after drowning in a soak-away and the body was retrieved by members of the community,”” Mulele said.

She said the boy was playing with an object which fell into the soak-away and when he tried to retrieve the object, he slipped into the soaker way and drowned.

Police officers who rushed to the scene inspected the body and did not find any physical injuries.

Mulele said the body was taken to Mansa general hospital mortuary awaiting burial as no foul play was suspected.

She also said that the police had continued investigating the matter.
