Landslide claims miner in Chingola, another survives

Christian Silavwe 27, a miner at Rudra Copper Mine in Chingola, has been reported dead in a mine accident while a colleague survived.

Silavwe and the surviving colleague Mulenga Nsama, 24, got trapped by the landslide.

Police confirmed on Friday that Silavwe died after being trapped by the land slide he was working from while his colleague is nursing a fractured leg in hospital.

Copperbelt Commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba said the incident happened on Thursday around 12:00 hours at the mining firm located off Kitwe – Chingola road.

He said Sunketa Reddy 37 a production manager reported that the two employees got trapped by the land slide where they were working from .

Silavwe according police was completely buried and died on the spot while Nsama was half way buried while standing.

“A miner in Chingola has died after he was buried alive while his colleague is in hospital as he sustained a fractured leg,” he said.

Mweemba said the duo on the material day were assigned to work at the open surge bin pit which was 2.5 meters down from the ground level .

It was reported that the accident happened while other workers went to have lunch leaving the two, minutes later there was a landslide which fell on both of them.

“It caused Silavwe to fall facing down and was buried completely while Nsama was half way buried in a standing position,” he said.

They were later retrieved and rushed to the hospital and Silavwe’ body was deposited in Nchanga South Hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem while Nsama was admitted to the said hospital as he sustained a fractured right leg.
