The opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) has assured its members and supporters across the country that the party remains united and strong despite the passing away of its president, Edith Nawakwi.
Party Spokesperson, Anthony Chibuye, said speculation about the party’s future was unnecessary, emphasizing that FDD was not a “one-person show” but a nationally rooted political movement that remains intact and formidable.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Chibuye urged members to focus on mourning the late Nawakwi with honor and dignity, rather than engaging in premature political debate.
“While Nawakwi’s passing leaves a gap, this is not the first time FDD has had to navigate change. The party endured similar transitions when several of its founding members either died or left,” he said.
He noted that several prominent figures, including Prof. Nkandu Luo of the former ruling Patriotic Front (PF) and current Mazabuka lawmaker Garry Nkombo of the UPND, were once members of FDD.
Chibuye further called for a peaceful and respectful mourning period, discouraging any attempts to politicize Nawakwi’s funeral.
“The party is in safe hands and remains capable of overcoming what may appear to be an insurmountable gap,” he assured.
He also expressed gratitude for the support received from the government, the Tonse Alliance, the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA), UPND Alliance, opposition parties, civil society organizations, the Church, and various partners, friends, and relatives.
