Relief for lawmaker Munthali, as police grants bond after health concerns in custody

Zambia’s police have granted Mafinga Member of Parliament Faith Munthali police bond after she was arrested and detained on criminal charges, following concerns over her health while in custody.

Police Assistant Public Relations Officer, Timothy Malumo, said in a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday that Munthali was released on Tuesday after meeting the bond requirements.

Munthali, who represents Mafinga Constituency, is facing charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and being an accessory after the fact under Sections 394 and 397 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia, according to police.

“The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Principal Resident Magistrate’s Court in Isoka District on Thursday, 17th September, 2026,” Malumo said.

Police said they remained committed to upholding the Bill of Rights under the Constitution, including the rights of suspects.

The granting of bond followed concerns raised by Munthali’s Citizens First party and other stakeholders about her health while she was detained at Isoka Police Station.

Citizens First Acting President, Mary Zambezi, said Munthali had become seriously ill while in detention and initially struggled to access hospital care. She said Munthali was later taken to hospital and treated for what she described as dangerously high blood pressure.

Zambezi claimed that Munthali collapsed after being returned to the cells and was taken back to hospital.

“This situation is particularly concerning given Hon. Munthali’s reported medical history, including a serious heart condition, recurrent bronchial attacks, and a recent major operation,” she said.

Police had previously said Munthali was jointly charged with three men over alleged offences involving an armed group in the Muyombe area of Mafinga District. The charges remain allegations to be tested in court.
