The Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS) says it has has commenced the disbursement of K1.2 billion in Social Cash Transfers (SCTs) to over 1.3 million vulnerable and poor households nationwide for the May–June 2025 payment cycle.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by Principal Public Relations Officer, Glenda Nachinga, the Ministry remained committed to maintaining SCT values at K800 for households without a person with a disability and K1,200 for those with a person with a disability.
She said the consistent support was intended to help beneficiaries meet their basic needs and improve household incomes.
“The Ministry continues to provide this life-saving intervention to the vulnerable and poor households in the country, which includes those with chronically ill persons on palliative care, female-headed households with at least three children under the age of 18, child-headed households, the elderly, and households with persons with disabilities,” Nachinga stated.
She noted that beneficiary households were identified and enrolled based on strict poverty criteria, adding that the Ministry has made strides in reducing human interface in the payment process.
Currently, 78 percent of SCT recipients—equivalent to 994,041 households—receive their payments through digital platforms such as mobile money and bank transfers.
This approach, the ministry claimed, has enhanced transparency and enabled real-time tracking of disbursements.
To support long-term poverty reduction, Nachinga said the Ministry was also linking SCT beneficiaries to livelihood empowerment programmes.
