The government says it has completed detailed mapping to distinguish drylands from ecologically sensitive wetlands in Western Province as part of efforts to contain a red locust outbreak threatening agriculture and the environment.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary, John Mulongoti, said the mapping would enable more targeted and environmentally safe interventions.
“This decisive step allows us to direct chemical control measures only in dryland zones while protecting ecologically sensitive wetlands,” Mulongoti said.
He explained that red locust swarms were being strategically driven out of wetlands into dry areas where chemical spraying can be carried out more safely and effectively.
“Enhanced monitoring is underway in all ecologically sensitive areas to detect any signs of resurgence and restrict breeding cycles early,” he said.
Mulongoti added that the e-Locust reporting system has been scaled up across hotspots to provide real-time data and guide rapid response interventions. Spraying is ongoing in high-risk zones, using both chemical and bio-pesticides where conditions permit.
He said the government was also training agricultural and extension officers in all districts of Western Province to ensure they were fully equipped for an effective and coordinated response.
“These efforts are being carried out in close collaboration with traditional leaders, local authorities, regional partners, and the affected communities,” Mulongoti said.
He stressed that the ultimate goal was to eliminate the red locust threat while preserving both livelihoods and the ecological integrity of Western Province.
“I call on all stakeholders, especially our farmers and community leaders, to remain alert and work hand-in-hand with agricultural officers on the ground. Together, we can overcome this challenge,” he said.
Mulongoti reaffirmed government’s commitment to protecting national food security and the well-being of the population.
According to Western Province Agricultural Coordinator, Rodwel Muntanga, the red locust infestation has already affected over 2,000 hectares of maize fields, with Luena Constituency in Limulunga District among the hardest hit.
