A 24-year-old man from Mbala District has drowned while swimming in Lake Tanganyika, prompting police to issue a caution over unsupervised activities on water bodies.

Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Simunji Mulonda, said the victim, Jonathan Simbule, had been swimming with his brothers, Suwilanji, 21, and James, when the incident occurred around 10:00 hours on Friday.

Mulonda said children who were swimming nearby suddenly rushed out of the water in panic. When questioned, one of them reported seeing a body. Suwilanji checked the area and found that his brother had drowned.

Members of the public helped retrieve the body before police officers arrived at the scene. A physical inspection found no signs of foul play.

The body has been taken to Mpulungu District Hospital Mortuary and is awaiting burial.

Mulonda urged the public to exercise caution when swimming or engaging in recreational activities on water bodies, especially without supervision.
