Newcastle snap five-game losing streak with 3-1 win over Brighton

Newcastle United halted a run of five consecutive Premier League defeats with a 3-1 home victory over Europe-chasing Brighton on Saturday, easing pressure at St James’ Park and denting the visitors’ continental ambitions.

Brighton dominated the early stages, with Nick Pope stopping an early effort from Jack Hinshelwood and Carlos Baleba striking the crossbar.

But Newcastle struck against the run of play when goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen rushed off his line, slipped, and allowed Jacob Murphy to cross for Will Osula to head into an empty net.

In a report by Sky Sports, Dan Burn doubled the lead against his former club with a first-half header.

Brighton threatened a comeback and nearly pulled one back when ex-Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh missed a clear chance, but substitute Harvey Barnes restored Newcastle’s control with a second-half finish to seal the win and end Brighton’s five-match unbeaten run.

Newcastle, who started the day in 15th place, climbed to 13th, while Brighton dropped to seventh and could fall further depending on weekend results.
