IMF helping Zambia resolve its $13.4 billion debt challenge —Georgieva

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has committed to provide all necessary information and assurances to Zambia’s creditors for them to reach favourable conclusions on the negotiations.

The commitment has been made by the visiting IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, who was confident that this would assist to expeditiously resolve the country’s debt situation.

The IMF Managing Director was speaking when she called on Finance Minister Stumbeko Musokotwane at his office on Monday in Lusaka.

“The IMF is working relentlessly in a bid to help Zambia resolve its debt situation with its creditor,” Georgieva said.

In response, Musokotwane said addressing Zambia’s excessive debt had been top on the Government’s agenda.

The country’s external debt has swelled to US$13.36 billion as at end-September 2022, owing to a continuation of projects left by the former Government.

He said this why Government was focused on pushing for the debt relief.

Musokotwane further thanked the IMF for the continued support towards addressing Zambia’s debt.

Georgieva’s visit to Zambia is be anchored on information exchange on the progress being made under the Funds’ extended credit facility.

Georgieva is visiting Zambia from Sunday 22 to Tuesday 24 January, 2023.
