Police in Lusaka are investigating a murder case involving an 18-year-old male suspect who allegedly assaulted his parents with an iron bar and a wooden plank embedded with nails, resulting in the death of his father.

According to a police statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday by Assistant Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, June 30, 2025, around 00:30 hours at the family’s residence in Kabuma Area, Kanyama Compound.

Chilabi said Kanyama Police Station, through the Kanyama Level One Hospital Police Post, received a report at 22:00 hours on the same day from Geoffrey Miyoba, aged 50, who reported that he and his wife, Judith Kafupi, aged 49, had been assaulted by their son.

“It is alleged that the suspect used an iron bar and a wooden plank embedded with sharp nails during the assault,” Chilabi stated.

Preliminary investigations revealed that while the family members were asleep, the teenager suddenly woke up and began stepping on his three sisters. When their mother intervened, the suspect turned violent and struck her with the iron bar.

The father, who tried to defend his wife, was also attacked with the spiked plank.

Both parents sustained multiple head injuries and general body pain.

They were rushed to Kanyama Level One Hospital with the help of concerned members of the public.

Chilabi said Miyoba was admitted in critical condition and later lost consciousness, while Kafupi remained in a stable condition.

“Two dockets of Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm (OABH) were initially opened. The suspect was apprehended, and both the iron bar and the nail-embedded plank used in the attack were recovered and kept as evidence,” he said.

However, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at 10:00 hours, police were notified by Kanyama Hospital that Miyoba had died while receiving treatment.

“As a result, the matter has now been classified as murder, and a docket has been opened accordingly,” Chilabi confirmed.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue. The deceased’s body has been transferred to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary for a postmortem examination.
