A 12-year-old boy of Kitwe has survived a crocodile attack with serious injuries, including a severed right hand and a broken arm, after being rescued by his uncle.

According to Copperbelt Police Commissioner Parthias Siandenge , the incident occurred at Kamitindu Stream in the Mitundu farming area, a tributary of the Kafue River, where the victim had gone to harvest maize with his uncle, Lewis Sondashi, and seven unidentified friends.

After swimming in the stream, the boys got out and the victim sat on a log bridge.

It was then that a crocodile emerged from the water, struck him with its tail, and dragged him into the stream.

“The crocodile bit his right hand, holding it entirely in its mouth. The uncle, who was nearby harvesting maize, rushed to the scene, jumped into the water, and began pulling the boy while the crocodile tried to drag him deeper,” Siandenge stated.

After a three-minute struggle, the crocodile severed the boy’s right hand, allowing the uncle to finally retrieve him from the water.

The victim was rushed to Kitwe Teaching Hospital, where he is currently admitted in a stable condition.

Police say they have opened an inquiry file and that investigations are ongoing.
