Chama North lawmaker, Yotam Mtayachalo, has claimed that some households in Ndola have resorted to buying and paying for mealie meal on installments to cope up with the high prices prevailing in the country.

Mtayachalo said this in Parliament on Thursday during the debate on President Hakainde Hichilema’s speech during opening of the National Assembly.

“Madam speaker, the cost of mealie meal is beyond the reach of many households, some people are buying the staple commodity on lay-by especially in Ndola, things are not good, the President (Hichilema) should have been categorical in the speech on how the government will tackle the high-cost mealie meal in the country,” he said.

At that point, Deputy Speaker cautioned the lawmaker to ensure the information he was providing was based on evidence and in which area of the country the untoward development was happening.

Meanwhile, Nakonde Member of Parliament, Luka Simumba, in his debate bemoaned the delay in releasing Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

“Madam speaker, for 2023 CDF, only about K6 million has been released out of the allocated K28.3 million contrary to the speech delivered by President Hichilema, which is worrying,” Simumba said.
