The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has denied bail to six men charged with unlawful possession of elephant ivory valued at approximately K2.64 million, ordering that they remain in custody pending trial.

The accused—Gift Miyanda, Mugundumu Miyanda, Mark Mukanya, Babou Awazi Selemani, Malikiso Inambao and Webster Muzyamba—have all pleaded not guilty to an offence under Section 130(2)(a) of the Zambia Wildlife Act.

In a ruling delivered on Thursday, Magistrate Peter Mungala found that the accused persons did not meet the conditions necessary for the granting of bail.

Court records show that the arrests followed an intelligence-led operation by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) conducted on March 9, 2026.

Officers reportedly searched a property in Chandamali Compound in the Lilayi area, where they discovered 94 pieces of elephant ivory concealed in seven boxes and two black plastic bags.

The ivory is said to weigh 471.8 kilogrammes.

Trial commences on May 4, 2026.
