Mines and Minerals Development Minister, Paul Kabuswe, has urged NFC Africa Mining Plc (NFCA) to prioritise local procurement and streamline its supplier registration process to ensure Zambia fully benefits from mining investments.
During a visit to the mine in Chambishi on Saturday, accompanied by Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo, Kabuswe expressed concern over the limited number of local suppliers registered with the company.
“We want management to simplify the supplier registration process and implement a robust supplier development programme to build local capacity, ensure quality, and promote fair pricing—aligned with President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision,” he said.
Kabuswe acknowledged efforts being made by the company to expand its operations towards achieving the national copper production target of three million tonnes annually.
He commended the company for engaging 198 active suppliers out of a registered 600, but stressed that only 191 were local—figures he said were still below expectations.
He emphasised that employee welfare must remain a cornerstone of sustainable mining operations.
“Through collaboration and strategic planning, we are confident in achieving our mining goals while uplifting local communities,” Kabuswe said.
NFCA Chief Executive Officer, Gao Yao, assured the delegation that the company would continue prioritising community development and local business support while addressing concerns raised during the visit.
Meanwhile, Copperbelt Minister Matambo described the mine tour as productive and successful, adding that such engagements with mine management, suppliers, and contractors were vital to strengthening Zambia’s mining ecosystem.
