The New Heritage Party says the United Party for National Development (UPND) government is not only leading the country into a period of food insecurity, but is risking the very lives of people by creating a situation where people are likely to be forced to eat Genetically Modified Organisms maize imported from South Africa.

Party President Chishala Kateka said this will compromise the gains made in the growing of maize not to mention the financial wellbeing of the many small-scale farmers that have been affected by the UPND’s fumbling in the agricultural sector.

Chishala said the assurance by Ministry of Information Media Director Thabo Kawana to the nation that “the Genetical Modified Organisms (GMOs) mealie meal to be imported from South Africa is not dangerous to human health is worrying.

She said a study conducted in France by a Professor Seralini and his team, found that GMO maize poses a threat to consumers adding that GMO foods cause cancer and had serious impacts on liver and kidney functioning.

“We are left wondering why he is assuring the nation that the GMO maize to be imported from South Africa is not dangerous to human health as “the mealie meal problem will be resolved in the shorted time possible,” Chishala said.

She said the UPND has been committing political blunder after blunder.

“That is saying that it is okay to eat this unsafe food because you will only consume it for a short period of time,” Chishala said.
