Police have confirmed the recapture of five escapees following a jailbreak at Nakonde Police Station on May 4, 2025.
The incident was reported minutes later by Officer-in-Charge, Mayumbelo Muzumi.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga said a total of 41 suspects—comprising convicts, remandees, and individuals awaiting court appearances or under active investigation—escaped after overpowering an officer during a routine meal delivery.
“Upon opening the male cells, the officer was ambushed, pulled into the cell block, and overpowered. The suspects then escaped through the main cell door,” Hamoonga explained.
He said the escapees included individuals charged or convicted for serious crimes such as murder, aggravated robbery, defilement, stock theft, and trafficking in psychotropic substances.
A police manhunt was immediately launched, and the same day, five suspects had been successfully re-apprehended.
The recaptured individuals are:
• A male juvenile (18), charged with theft
• A male juvenile (15), charged with vandalism
• Singoyi Stainely (62), charged with murder
• Edward Sikanyika (33), charged with murder
• Chimwemwe Ng’ambi (21), charged with murder
During the operation, Ng’ambi sustained a gunshot wound to the right pelvic area while resisting arrest.

He was transported to Nakonde District Hospital, where he is receiving treatment and reported to be in stable condition.
Hamoonga said the four other suspects have been securely re-detained and will be processed accordingly.
“The Zambia Police Service has intensified manhunt operations. Officers remain on high alert as efforts continue to apprehend the remaining escapees,” he said.
He urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, and to report any suspicious activity or information to the nearest police station.
Hamoonga reaffirmed the Police’s commitment to maintaining law and order, vowing that all escapees will be brought to justice.
