The 13th Session of the Zambia-Mozambique Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security opened on Monday at Twangale Park in Chilanga District, with a strong call for enhanced cooperation to combat transnational crimes.
According to a joint statement issued by Ministry of Defence Principal Public Relations Officer, Paul Shalala, and Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security’s Mwaala Kalaluka, the four-day meeting will address key defence and security issues affecting both countries.
Speaking during the official opening, Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Maambo Haamaundu highlighted irregular migration, smuggling, human trafficking, drug trafficking, and terrorism as urgent threats requiring joint action.
“Peace and security are a prerequisite for national development. As Zambia, we are committed to ensuring this Joint Permanent Commission is a success and delivers tangible outcomes,” Haamaundu said.
Mozambique’s Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Casmiro Augusto Mueio, echoed the need for collaboration, urging a united regional response to rising insecurity in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
“Let us work together and adopt a common approach under the spirit of unity,” Mueio said.
The Zambian delegation includes Home Affairs and Internal Security Permanent Secretary Dickson Matembo, Zambia National Service Commander Lt. Gen. Maliti Solochi II, Army Director of Operations Brig. Gen. Barry Mutale, Air Force Chief of Operations Brig. Gen. Lloyd Chonya, Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba, and Correctional Service Commissioner General Frederick Chilukutu.
Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma and Home Affairs Minister Jack Mwiimbu, along with their Mozambican counterparts, are expected to attend the Ministerial Meeting on Wednesday, which will conclude the session.
