The government has dismissed social media rumours claiming that former Defence Minister, Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, popularly known as GBM, has died—confirming that he was alive and in a stable condition.

On Tuesday, April 15, 2025, social media was flooded with false reports alleging Mwamba’s death.

However, Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana, who visited Mwamba at Maina Soko Military Hospital that same afternoon, clarified that the former minister remains admitted and in a stable condition.

“Mwamba is not in any danger,” Kawana assured, warning that individuals spreading misinformation would be held accountable under the country’s cyber laws.

“Spreading false news can have serious consequences, including causing unnecessary alarm and distress to families and loved ones,” Kawana said, urging the public to verify information before sharing it online.

He added: “It is essential for individuals to be mindful of the information they share online and to verify its accuracy to prevent harm to others.”

Meanwhile, Mwamba’s lawyer, Charles Changano, confirmed that his client remained hospitalized and was receiving medical treatment.

Mwamba, a former Vice President of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), is currently serving a five-year jail sentence after being convicted of corruption.
