Party condemns govt’s bid to overturn Lubinda’s 2024 acquittal by court

The United for Better Zambia (UBZ) party has expressed deep concern over what it terms the continued political persecution of Patriotic Front (PF) Vice President and Tonse Alliance acting Chairperson, Given Lubinda.

UBZ president Apostle, Hector Sondo, said the decision by Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Gilbert Phiri, to to challenge Lubinda’s 2024 acquittal in a corruption case signals a targeted effort by the UPND government to silence opposition voices.

Lubinda was acquitted by a competent court in 2024 after charges brought against him were deemed to have no merit.

However, the DPP has now filed to overturn the acquittal, arguing that the trial court erred in law.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Sondo claimed the move is politically motivated and aimed at derailing Lubinda’s influence ahead of the 2026 general elections.

“This renewed onslaught follows the government’s earlier attempts to block former President Edgar Lungu from contesting the 2026 elections,” Sondo said.

He warned that Lubinda’s growing prominence within the Tonse Alliance has made him a target of state-led legal actions designed to eliminate formidable opposition before the polls.

Sondo condemned what he described as abuse of state institutions to settle political scores and urged citizens to reject “politics of vengeance.”

“The hunger for power should not override the principles of justice, democracy, and fair competition,” he stated.

He further called on Zambians, civil society organizations, and the international community to stand in solidarity with opposition leaders facing what he termed unjust actions by the state.
