Police in Lusaka have detained a 30-year-old man in connection with the alleged murder of his nephew in George Compound, Matero.
The incident is reported to have occurred on July 6, 2026, around 20:00 hours, according to Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, Chilabi said the matter was reported to Matero Police Station on July 7, 2026, around 00:40 hours, according to the Zambia Police Service.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly strangled the child, causing fatal injuries to the neck.

The suspect, identified as Clayton Phiri, remains in police custody, and investigations are ongoing and the victim has been identified as Samuel Phiri, aged 5.
“According to initial reports, a neighbour heard people calling for help. When he went outside to check, he allegedly found the suspect strangling the child,” Chilabi said.
He said members of the public immediately intervened, restrained the suspect, and rushed the child to George Clinic, where he was pronounced dead.
“The body of the deceased is lying at the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination,” Chilabi said.
He said the motive for the alleged offence had not yet been established and Police were still gathering more information as investigations progress.
