President Hakainde Hichilema has paid tribute to the late Pope Francis, describing him as a global moral beacon and servant of God who embodied humility, simplicity, and compassion.
Speaking at a memorial service held Friday at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus in Lusaka’s Long Acres, President Hichilema commended the late Pontiff’s unwavering commitment to the poor and marginalized, as well as his unique ability to unite people across divisions.
“Pope Francis’ legacy continues to inspire people across the world,” President Hichilema said. “His impact on the Catholic Church and global society will be felt for generations to come.”
He added that the Pope’s values—social justice, environmental stewardship, and reconciliation—align closely with Zambia’s national aspirations.
“Pope Francis was a global leader who broke barriers and built bridges, promoting understanding among nations and communities,” he said, citing the Pope’s mediation efforts in Sudan and calls to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
President Hichilema urged world leaders to follow the Pope’s example by working toward conflict resolution and showing compassion to those in need.
