The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has warned tax evaders of continued prosecution, a vice which has increased recently.

ZRA has said that through intensified tax audits, it has recently observed an increase in tax evasion cases by taxpayers.

Authority Corporate Communications Manager Oliver Nzala, has therefore sent a stern warning of continued prosecution of all those involved in tax evasion and smuggling activities.

Nzala said the latest prosecuted case of tax evasion involved Changesheng Mining Equipment Company Limited and its Director Wang Qi, aged 33, who appeared before the Economic and Financial Crimes Court in Kitwe and was found with a case to answer on all the 24 counts of false returns and tax evasion.

He said the actions of Changesheng Mining Equipment Company Limited and Wang Qi, its Director, caused loss of revenue to the government in taxes amounting to K2, 513,234.47.

“Facts of the case are that Changesheng Mining Equipment Company Limited and Wang Qi its Director, on dates unknown but between the 1st day of May 2021 and the 31st day of August 2022 in Kitwe, jointly and whilst acting together, in purported compliance with the law, provided documents namely Tax Invoices to Zambia Revenue Authority.

“They claimed to show that Changesheng Mining Equipment Company Limited had purchased taxable goods from other companies on the Copperbelt which was false, thereby defrauding the Government millions of revenue,” he said in a statement.

Further, Nzala said, Changesheng Mining Equipment Company Limited and Wang Qi its Director evaded paying Value Added Tax and interest by providing false returns that taxable purchases were made from local Copperbelt Companies when in fact not.

“The case has been adjourned to April 3, 2023 for commencement of defence by the accused persons,” Nzala said.
