The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has destroyed over 5,350 non-compliant electrical products in Lusaka, valued at more than K439,000.
The products were reportedly confiscated during enforcement actions conducted from February 11 to 14, 2025, after being found in violation of compulsory safety standards.
ZCSA Communication and Public Relations Manager, Brian Hatyoka, stated in a press release on Monday that the destruction exercise aimed to protect consumers from unsafe electrical products.
“The Open Market Surveillance inspections covered major trading hubs, retail outlets, and importers along Cairo, Cha Cha Cha, and Kafue roads, as well as Westgate Mall, Makeni, and Kamwala Trading areas,” Hatyoka said.
He noted with concern that adaptors, sockets, and extension cables were among the most common non-compliant electrical products on the market, posing risks such as electric shocks, fires, personal injuries, and property damage.
To combat the illegal supply of substandard electrical products, ZCSA has intensified public education, stakeholder engagement, and enforcement actions across the country.
Hatyoka also revealed that on March 11, 2025, the Agency hosted a stakeholders’ meeting with electrical product suppliers to raise awareness on compliance requirements and enhance consumer protection.
“The Agency warns of stern action against traders supplying non-compliant products on the Zambian market. We remain committed to enforcing compulsory standards to protect consumers and the environment,” Hatyoka said.
