‘Stop it,’ Evangelicals demand immediate halt to debates on extending presidential term limits

The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) has opposed the ongoing debate on extending presidential term limits, calling for an immediate end to discussions on removing the constitutional limit.

EFZ called on all stakeholders to abandon the debate and redirect national attention towards economic recovery, unity, healing and service to the Zambian people.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday, EFZ Executive Director Reverend Allan Kasungami called for an immediate end to what he described as a divisive and unnecessary debate.

Kasungami said rushing or manipulating constitutional provisions to accommodate individual political ambitions posed a serious threat to Zambia’s democratic foundations.

“The constitution is the sacred cornerstone of Zambia’s democracy, not a piece of legislation to be altered for political expedience,” he said.

He said amending or extending presidential tenure limits risked plunging the country into political instability and reversing democratic gains that citizens had historically fought to protect.

Kasungami said leadership should focus on alleviating the economic challenges facing Zambians rather than securing political survival.

“The Fellowship views the persistence of the debate as a dangerous distraction from the acute challenges currently facing the Zambian people,” he said.

He called on political actors, civil society organisations and the Christian community to reject any attempts to undermine the Constitution.

Kasungami said EFZ’s position was firmly rooted in the legacy of the 2001 Oasis Declaration, under which the Church and civil society joined forces to oppose a third-term bid and protect the two-term presidential limit.
