United States President, Donald Trump, has criticised this year’s Nobel Peace Prize recipient, saying he had never heard of her and claiming the award should have gone to him for what he described as his role in resolving global conflicts.
Trump made the remarks during a Republican campaign rally in Syracuse, New York, where he questioned the selection of South African jurist Navi Pillay, who chaired a United Nations commission of inquiry that accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza — a claim rejected by Israel, reports AA media.
“Today they gave out the Nobel Peace Prize to a person I never heard of. The person nobody did. It’s a mystery person,” Trump said, while offering congratulations to the winner.
He repeated his claim that he had “settled eight wars” and argued that his efforts in resolving conflicts should have earned him the prestigious award.
“Any one of these eight wars, you get the Nobel Prize. I did eight. No president’s ever done any,” he said.
Trump also attacked the Nobel Peace Prize Committee and Norway, which awards the prize, saying the decision not to honour him represented a failure by the institution.
“The United States of America, represented by me as your president, should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, but didn’t. And this is an indelible stain on the country of Norway,” he said.
In a later post on his Truth Social platform, Trump again criticised Pillay, saying he knew nothing about her and claiming she was selected because of her views on Israel.
“I know nothing about this woman, and neither does anyone else,” Trump wrote, adding that the Nobel Prize had been “forever discredited” by what he described as “radical ideologues.”
Trump has repeatedly said he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, pointing to his diplomatic efforts and claiming credit for helping resolve international disputes.
Pillay, a former United Nations high commissioner for human rights, has held several senior positions in international justice, including serving as a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and as a judge at the International Criminal Court.
She chaired the UN Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory from 2021 to 2025. The commission concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, an allegation Israel has strongly denied.
The Nobel Committee said Pillay was recognised for her work in advancing international law and for efforts to prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
