Two Lusaka men in court over attempted theft of copper cathodes worth $30,000

Two Lusaka men have appeared before the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court over an alleged attempt to steal copper cathodes valued at US$30,000, property of Kansanshi Copper Mine PLC.

Patrick Mamune and 33-year-old Kennedy Kabangu are also facing charges for allegedly attempting to steal a Scania truck worth US$125,000, reportedly owned by Zalawi Company Limited.

Mamune is additionally charged with uttering false documents, contrary to Section 352 of the Penal Code.

He is alleged to have knowingly and fraudulently presented a forged document to one Thomas Mwenya on January 11, 2025, in Lusaka.

Authorities described the incident as a coordinated attempt to commit two high-value thefts on the same day.

The accused are expected to take plea before Magistrate Exildah Chanda.

Meanwhile, in a separate case, Abraham Mawelele, 30, a businessman from Lusaka’s Misisi compound, is facing theft charges for allegedly stealing an HP laptop valued at K35,000 from the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants on January 29, 2025.

Mawelele is also expected to take plea this week.
