Updated poll results show Hichilema leading by 225,971 votes from 105 Constituencies announced

President Hakainde Hichilema has opened a commanding lead of 225,971 votes over challenger Brian Mundubile after the Electoral Commission of Zambia released updated presidential results from 105 of the country’s 226 constituencies.

Hichilema of the UPND has garnered 1,056,812 votes representing 53.21 percent of total valid votes cast followed by Mundubile of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity with 830,841 votes, or 41.97 percent.

The commission reported total valid votes at 1,927,737 from 1,991,017 total votes cast and rejected ballots stood at 63,280, with 3,588,987 registered voters, the turnout for the 105 constituencies reported so far is 55.5 percent.

The remaining 121 constituencies were still being counted and verified at the national results center, according to ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis.

“With 105 out of 226 constituencies reported, President Hichilema leads by 225,971 votes, representing an 11.24 percent margin. The results are provisional and counting continues in the remaining constituencies,” Zaloumis said.

Beyond the top two, 10 other presidential candidates shared 36,850 votes, representing 1.91 percent of the valid vote.

Citizens First leader, Harry Kalaba, placed third overall with 9,454 votes, followed by Zambia Must Prosper’s Kelvin Bwalya with 9,303 votes and Socialist Party’s Fred M’membe has 5,664 votes so far.”

Independent candidate Given Katuta has 3,671 votes, Organised People’s Party’s Brian Mushimba polled 2,066 votes and Movement for Economic Emancipation’s Given Chansa has 1,713 votes.

Ackim Njovu of the Democratic Union has 1,197 votes, Howard Kunda of the Zambia We Want Party polled 1,092 votes, Richwell Siamune of New Focus Party has 1,041 votes, and Daniel Pule of Christian Democratic Party has 659 votes.

“We are appealing to all stakeholders to remain calm and allow the Electoral Commission to complete the counting and announcement of results in accordance with the law. Every vote will be accounted for,” Zaloumis said.
