The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has released its third consolidated presidential election tally, with UPND candidate Hakainde Hichilema leading the race after results from 70 constituencies were counted.
According to the ECZ announcement made at National Totalling Centre on Sunday, Mr. Hichilema polled 626,434 votes, followed by NRPUP candidate Brian Mundubile who garnered 505,795 votes from the same batch of constituencies.
The gap between the top two candidates currently stands at 120,639 votes and the results are part of ongoing announcements and do not represent the final national outcome.
Other candidates in the race recorded significantly lower totals with Citizens First’s Harry Kalaba receiving 6,469 votes, while Zambia Must Prosper’s Kelvin Bwalya polled 5,565 votes and Socialist Party’s Dr. Fred Mmembe had 3,747 votes.
Independent candidate Given Katuta secured 2,500 votes, Movement for Economic Emancipation (MEE’s) Given Chansa had 2,077 votes, and Organised People’s Party (OPP’s) Brian Mushimba polled 1,589 votes.
Leaders Movement (LM’s) Richard Silumbe received 993 votes.
“So those are the consolidated results from the time we started announcing to date for the seventy constituencies,” ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis said.
Zaloumis also listed Democratic Union’s Ackim Njovu and Zambia Wake Up Party’s Howard Kunda, both on 735 votes, New Focus Party’s Richwell Siamunene with 646 votes, and Christian Democratic Party’s Daniel Pule with 302 votes.
The commission confirmed that tallying was continuing and that more results would be added in subsequent announcements and urged the public and political parties to remain calm as the process unfolds.
