Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary, Hapenga Kabeta, has underscored the strategic importance of developing the Nacala Corridor to boost Zambia’s export capacity and strengthen its integration into global markets.
Kabeta said the project would improve trade efficiency and unlock new economic opportunities for Zambia.
He was speaking on Friday during a meeting with a delegation from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Higashi Kunihiko, Director of the Country Assistance Planning Division for Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
He commended Japan’s continued support for infrastructure and industrial projects along the vital trade route, noting that industrialization remained central to transforming Zambia’s mining sector and wider economy.
“Japan’s partnership in infrastructure development is crucial, as quality transport networks form the backbone of sustainable economic growth,” Kabeta said, adding that Zambia was ready to welcome increased Japanese investment, particularly in value-adding secondary industries linked to mineral resources.
In response, Kunihiko reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting the Nacala Corridor’s development.
He stated that enhanced transportation infrastructure would stimulate industrial growth, improve the movement of minerals and goods, and bolster regional economic expansion — particularly benefiting mineral-rich economies in Southern Africa.
Both sides pledged to strengthen cooperation in mining, infrastructure, and industrial development, recognising the mutual benefits of this strategic partnership.
The Nacala Corridor, linking Zambia to regional and international markets via Mozambique’s Nacala Port, is expected to lower logistical costs and boost trade competitiveness once fully developed.
