Zambia is taking strategic steps to harness innovative technologies and attract investment into key sectors including tourism, mining, agriculture, manufacturing, and energy, government authorities have said.

Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry Permanent Secretary, Lillian Bwalya, announced that Zambia was participating in the Osaka Kansai Expo 2025, which officially opened on April 13, 2025, in Yumeshima, Osaka, Japan.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at the Zambian Embassy in Tokyo, Faith Chilube, Bwalya reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting Zambia as a premier investment and tourism destination to drive inclusive economic growth.

She said the Expo offered a unique opportunity for Zambia to tap into global innovations and best practices across sectors such as infrastructure, health, agriculture, and manufacturing.

“This Expo is centered on innovation and future-oriented solutions. We believe it will enable Zambia to build strategic partnerships and draw inspiration from global best practices to add value to our local resources and improve service delivery to our people,” Bwalya stated.

She encouraged the private sector in Zambia to actively engage in the Expo, highlighting its wide thematic reach—spanning health, women’s empowerment, tourism, and technology—as a chance to forge transformative collaborations.

Bwalya emphasized that tourism remained a priority sector for Zambia’s economic transformation, noting government policies such as visa waivers for Japanese nationals, visa-on-arrival for over 160 countries, and investments in infrastructure and accessibility.

She cited ongoing efforts including the “Visit Zambia” and “Zambia KuChalo” campaigns, the Domestic Tourism Strategy, and the Tourism Investment Guide as tools enhancing the country’s image as a competitive destination.

Zambia’s Ambassador to Japan, Dr. Tobias Mulimbika, expressed satisfaction with the country’s participation in the six-month Expo, being held under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.”

“This Expo is a global platform for dialogue, innovation, and partnership. We are showcasing Zambia’s investment potential in line with the Expo’s three key sub-themes: Saving Lives, Empowering Lives, and Connecting Lives,” he said.

Mulimbika also revealed that Zambia’s National Day at the Expo will be celebrated on July 7, 2025. The Zambian Embassy, in partnership with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), is organizing an Investment Forum to showcase Zambia’s diverse investment opportunities.

He noted that the Expo was also structured around eight sub-thematic areas such as “The Future of Earth and Biodiversity,” “Co-creating Cultures for the Future,” and “The Future of Community and Mobility,” which align closely with Zambia’s development priorities.

“With over 150 countries and 25 international organizations participating, this Expo presents a significant opportunity for Zambia to strengthen diplomatic ties, attract investment, and pursue meaningful global partnerships,” Mulimbika said.

The Osaka Kansai Expo 2025 runs from April 13 to October 13, 2025, and is focused on showcasing forward-looking technologies, sustainable development solutions, and global collaboration to tackle shared challenges.
